Muscat, Oman – Ahmad bin Majid International School proudly presented a private screening of Sultan of the
Seas: Sultan Said bin Sultan Al Busaidi, a powerful documentary honoring the historic ruler whose visionary leadership established Oman as a leading force in East Africa. The film screening brought together distinguished guests, including community supporters of ABM and noted Friends of ABM, to celebrate the shared heritage and history between Oman and East Africa.
Directed by Friedrich Klutsch, the documentary offers an in-depth portrayal of Sultan Said’s diplomatic and cultural achievements. Capturing perspectives from both local experts and international scholars, the film explores the intricate historical relationships that have evolved across regions over centuries, focusing on how fractured identities and diverse influences were bridged by Oman’s pioneering contributions. These contributions extended across political, commercial, social, and cultural domains, with the spread of Islam and Arab culture creating lasting ties across East Africa.
Filmed at iconic locations worldwide—including Zanzibar, multiple sites across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the United States, and within Oman—the documentary immerses viewers in Sultan Said’s expansive influence. A particularly noteworthy location is Beit al Ajaib, or the “House of Wonders,” an architectural marvel located in Stone Town, Zanzibar. Constructed in 1883 for Sultan Barghash bin Said as a ceremonial palace and official reception hall, the building was celebrated as a modern marvel, being the first in Zanzibar to have electricity and the first in East Africa equipped with an elevator.
ABM students were honored to take part in this cinematic journey, which brought Oman’s rich history vividly to life, encouraging students to deepen their appreciation for Omani heritage. This event exemplifies ABM’s dedication to enhancing students’ understanding of their cultural identity, strengthening their connection to Oman’s legacy, and fostering a lifelong respect for the shared history that binds Oman to other cultures and nations.
The guest list included the royal family members, Ambassador of the US Embassy in Oman, the filmmakers, several dignitaries and Board members.
